This weekend my family went to a birthday party at the home of some Mexican Indians. The family was Aztec and they see a major part of their purpose in Memphis to be living as ambassadors of their culture. With this goal in view their party was very interesting. We arrived “on time,” according to the invitation, but were just under 2 hours early for the festivities. The food was AMAZING and community was very enriching. By far the highlights were the pinatas and seeing the videos of their Aztec Dance group. Their group is composed of Mexican Indians in Memphis who make their own dress, accessories, and instruments by hand. The drums are carved from tree trunks, the noisemakers made with shells, and the feathers are from all kinds of birds (I can only remember the peacock). I had to comment on this fiesta this week because I left the party saying, “I love Memphis!” There are so many opportunities in this city to cross cultures, grow, be enriched, and learn from one another. Take advantage of it! You can start by watching the video below (if you are interested in having them come perform for your school or business let me know!). Also, enjoy the photo of the Nile Crocodile handmade boots- Real nice, Clark.
